About Your Transmission



There are two basic types of transmissions, the automatic transmission and the manual transmission. As their names imply one changes gears automatically and the other is changed manually.

Manual Transmission
The manual transmission consists of a series of gears that convert the engine speed into vehicle speed by changing the ratio between engine speed and the drive axles. Because the engine is always running the clutch disengages the transmission form the engine when it is depressed. Thus allowing the engine to continue running while the vehicle is stationary. Releasing the clutch will engage the transmission with the engine and allow the vehicle to move. As the engine speed increases it is necessary to shift the gears in the transmission in order to gain speed while allowing the engine speed to remain at a safe level. This is accomplished by releasing the gas pedal, depressing the clutch, shifting the transmission and then releasing the clutch while depressing the throttle at the same time.
Automatic Transmission
The automatic transmission performs the same function as the manual transmission but in a much more seemingly simple way. The automatic transmission however is much more complicated than the manual. The automatic transmission uses a torque converter, gears, clutches, hydraulics, sensors and in most cases computers to shift gears all by simply putting the vehicle in drive. The automatic transmission is the most complicated and sophisticated device on your car and because it is it requires more frequent maintenance than the manual transmission.
Both types of transmissions will require maintenance and you should refer to your owners manual for all maintenance intervals as well as types of fluid to use and the amount necessary to service them.
There are two basic types of maintenance services that can be performed on your transmission. Proper maintenance is essential to maximizing the life and performance of your transmission.
Conventional Transmission Service – Involves removing the transmission oil pan, replacing the transmission filter and gasket, and then re-installing the transmission oil pan. This type of service typically replaces only approximately 1/3 of the transmission fluid, leaving 2/3 of the contaminated fluid behind.
Transmission Flush – An alternative modern method which involves adding a cleaning agent to the contaminated fluid, circulating it in the transmission until the transmission reaches operating temperature, and then flushing the transmission with more fluid than is necessary to fill it from empty. This ensures that all of the contaminated fluid is removed from the transmission as well as the torque converter.
If you are shopping around for transmission service, be sure to ask about the transmission flush.
