More BMW M3 Tiger Edition photos surface
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, China, BMW, Luxury BMW M3 Tiger Edition for the Chinese market - Click above for high-res image gallery BMW's new Joy ad campaign looks to have made it to China with the M3 Tiger - or as one Autoblog commenter called it, "the M3 by Ed Hardy." Part of the continued celebration of a quarter century of M3s and the year of the tiger, the limited edition coupe took part in a photo shoot with a supporting cast so excited about the car they spend most of their time airborne. On a more mundane note, the Fire Orange Metallic M3 will have black exterior accents and 19-inch wheels, while black Novilla leather will coat the inside and orange tiger heads are embroidered into the headrests. Only 250 M3 Tigers are set for production, and that may be 249 more than the world needs. Hat tip to Ragan! Spy Shots: BMW M5 prototype gets towed off the 'Ring
Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Performance, Europe, BMW, Luxury BMW M5 prototype gets towed home - Click above for high-res image gallery Occasionally, we find ourselves wondering why manufacturers continue to insist on testing their prototype vehicles at the infamous Nürburgring. Yes, the track is 13 miles of some of the most abusive variations in elevation and apex around, but it's also flooded with legions of hungry spy photographers just waiting to publicize the carmakers' latest efforts. You'd think they'd come up with a locale with a smidge more privacy. But the truth is that the Nürburgring offers a unique combination of length, speed and legality that's difficult to come across elsewhere in the world. Those three factors combine to allow engineers to push vehicles well past what the common buyer will ever experience, and sometimes, that means pushing a vehicle all the way to mechanical failure. We aren't exactly sure what caused this particular BMW M5 mule to go lame, but we're guessing that the testing was well worth what was bound to be the mountain of paperwork facing these guys when they get back to the office. At least the X5 seems to be up to the task of pulling its sportier brother around. BMW M3 Pure Edition comes from a Land Down Under
Filed under: Coupe, Sedan, Performance, BMW, Australia If there's another place on Earth where they love V8 sedans and coupes as much as Americans, surely it's Australia. It's the land of the V8 Supercars series, Holden Commodores, FPV Falcons, Eric Bana's beloved beast and the country that gave us back the Pontiac GTO and the underpinnings for the latest Chevy Camaro. And with the Germans leading the charge these days with the likes of the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, it's only fitting that the Land Down Under should get its own special edition. Following the release of the Frozen Gray edition and word of the upcoming Tiger edition for China comes news of a special M3 just for Australia. Called the Pure Edition, it packs some unique touches, including glossy black 19-inch split-spoke alloys, dark chrome trim and an Anthracite cloth and black leather interior. That's about the extent of the special touches fitted to either the coupe or sedan - of which only 50 examples will be made. The Pure Edition comes standard in the metallic white pictured here, though a raft of optional metallic color choices are available, including - appropriately enough - Melbourne Red. BMW announces end of M6 production
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Europe, BMW, Luxury 2011 BMW M6 - Click above for high-res image gallery Like it or not, it's officially time to say auf wiedersehen to the potent M6. BMW has just announced that it has ceased production of both the M6 coupe and convertible. The uniquely styled GT cars primarily found favor here in the U.S., with a total of 3,528 of the hardtops and 3,247 convertibles sold on American soil. In total, the company managed to sell 14,152 of the cars since production of the M6 started in 2005. As you may recall, the drophead version didn't hit the assembly line until 2006. We're sure the loss of the M6 is a heartbreak to some out there, but we know that there's a replacement model on the horizon, and we're more morose over the news that BMW is also sending the muscular V10 at the heart of the car to pasture at the same time. That's right, kids. BMW is no longer planning to shoehorn a 10-pot into any vehicle it makes, opting instead for forced induction and eight cylinders. The 5.0-liter engine with its astronomical 8,250 rpm redline is the stuff of mechanical daydreams. Or at least it was. Hit the jump for the full press blast.
