BMW announces new V12-powered 760i and 760Li in Europe
Filed under: Sedans/Saloons, BMW click above for a high res gallery of the new BMW 760 As other automakers begin to move towards smaller, more efficient engines, BMW hasn't given up on the V12. Not only has the company added a V12 to the latest 7 series, it's an all new engine with 6.0-liters of displacement, carrying the same technology as the new 4.4-liter V8 in the 750i. Twin turbocharging and direct injection yield 544 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm. Unlike the V8, the 12 retains the standard intake in the valley, exhaust on the outside flow configuration. An eight-speed automatic transmission will deliver all that juice to the rear wheels. The V12 will be available in both the standard and extended wheelbase variants of the 760 and will push it 60 mph in a claimed 4.6 seconds. The 760 reportedly also gets a combined 18.2 mpg (US) on the EU test cycle. A 6.6-liter version will power the production version of the new Rolls-Royce 200EX and should probably top the 600 hp mark. Since BMW slipped out this press release in Europe while making no mention of the 760 here in New York, it seems unlikely that the V12 will be coming Stateside, although we're checking with BMW to confirm. Rumormill: BMW looking at triple-turbo diesel for new performance X5
Filed under: Crossovers/CUVs, BMW, Rumormill BMW X5 M - Click above for high-res image gallery According to a post on the forums at GermanCarZone, BMW is currently working on a new version of its 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine, which puts out 286 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque in its current, twin-turbocharged guise. To bump that power peak a bit higher, those crazy German engineers are rumored to be adding a third turbocharger that would boost horsepower to around 350. This new tri-turbo diesel V6 would see its first application in a BMW X5 Performance Diesel. In a bid to maintain the oil-burners fuel efficiency, BMW would add hybrid componentry that includes stop/start and regenerative braking. These bits would earn the big SUV entrance into the automaker's Efficient Dynamics club. In addition to the high-performance engine, the X5 Performance Diesel would reportedly get a unique body kit that includes subtle lips around the wheel arches along with revised air intakes and a front spoiler. It's too early to verify any of these rumors, but we'll be sure to keep our ears to the ground for more. BMW M3 GT4 to campaign in Nurburgring 24-hour enduro
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupes, Sports/GTs, BMW BMW M3 GT4 - Click above for a high-res image gallery BMW is far and away the most prolific automaker at the annual 24-hour Nurburgring race, with 114 class victories over the event's 29-year history and almost one-third of last year's field comprised of Bimmers. This year, BMW's Customer Racing program will partner with Schubert Motorsport to bring out a BMW M3 GT4 to campaign in the GT4 class, with FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) drivers Agusto Farfus, Jorg Muller and Andy Priaulx joining two journalists from German magazine Sport Auto. The M3 GT4, which benefits from all the race-ready hardware you'd expect in a vehicle prepped for a 24-hour enduro, made its debut at last weekend's ADAC Westfalenfahrt at the 'Ring, taking the win in the SP10 class and finishing 30th overall. The M3 will be back at the Nordschleife for the 24 hour race the weekend of May 23 and 24. Review: 2009 BMW 335d proves 'Efficient Dynamics' more entertaining than it sounds
Filed under: In the Autoblog Garage, Sedans/Saloons, Green, BMW 2009 BMW 335d - Click above for high-res gallery In recent weeks, America's comparatively stratospheric price of diesel fuel has slid back down to achieve parity with the price of conventional gasoline. One might think this development means it's a great time to invest in a new oil-burner for the driveway, but the reality is that unless you're an OPEC minister, there's no good way to ensure this pricing trend is here to stay. So, allow us to table the fuel economy argument for a moment and suggest a radically different reason for going diesel: driving enjoyment. While this idea may strike as an inherently foreign concept to most American motorists, the truth is that the torquetastic nature of diesel engines is particularly well suited to the Great American Roadscape - even more so than hybrid drivetrains. You can be forgiven for thinking otherwise - after all, automakers haven't exactly given U.S. consumers a boatload of entertaining derv burners to sample, have they? Thankfully, the folks at BMW may have just the prescription: the 335d. Photos Copyright (C)2009 John Neff / Weblogs, Inc.
