BMW names Marc Girard head of interior design
Filed under: Trends, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, BMW The field of car design has been about as stable as an active volcano lately, with several major automakers replacing their design chiefs in quick succession. Over the past couple of weeks, Volvo's styling guru Steve Mattin quit, and he was replaced by Ford designer Peter Horbury, whose post in turn was taken up by Moray Callum. Before that, Volkswagen designer Derek Jenkins defected to Mazda, while Mazda's chief designer Laurens van der Acker was replaced by Ikuo Maeda. But in advance of all that, Chris Bangle sent shockwaves through the industry (in typical Bangle style) by leaving BMW. Adrian van Hooydonk was promoted to take his place, but after Munich's interior designer Michael Ninic died suddenly last year, Hooydonk was stretched a little thin. The latest appointment, however, should help alleviate some of the pressure, as Marc Girard has been named head of BMW's interior design department. The French designer, educated at the Art Center College of Design, has been with the BMW Group for some 15 years now, and has been responsible for the cabins on several Bimmer and MINI models of late. It's a logical move for the Bavarian automaker, and a well-deserved step up for the talented cabinsmith. Filed under: New York Auto Show, SUVs, Crossovers/CUVs, BMW BMW X6M - Click above for an image gallery The official details on the BMW X6M and X5M aren't due to be released until tomorrow, but Carscoop decided to drop the first batch of photos of the new uber-utes from BMW a day early. Early reports indicate both M-modified sleds will be powered by a tweaked variant of the twin-turbocharged V8 currently fitted to the X6, with output increasing from 400 hp to 550 hp. The suspension, brakes and transmission will all be modified for duty in the Ms, but that's all we have for now. Check back tomorrow for the official details. New York: BMW expresses joy with new Z4
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Convertibles, BMW BMW Z4 joymobile - Click above for high-res image gallery The latest addition to the long running series of BMW art cars is this Z4. Unlike previous art cars where the machine was the canvas, the z4 you see above was actually used as the paint brush. When BMW unveiled the new 2009 Z4 at the Detroit Auto Show, they showed a video of artist Robin Rhodes creating a massive painting using a Z4 with its wheels dripping with red and green paint. For the last two weeks, the car and two of the painted panels have been on display with several of the earlier art cars at Grand Central Station, but they've now been moved into the Jacob Javits Center for the New York Auto Show. We were walking by this morning and thought you might enjoy some car art with your coffee. Check out photos of Z4 art car in our high-res gallery below. New York: BMW pulls sheet off X6 M
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Crossovers/CUVs, BMW BMW X6 M - Click above for high-res image gallery Here at the New York Auto Show today, BMW is publicly showing the new X6 M for the first time, resplendent in red. For all the questions that were raised about the X6's own reason for being a year ago when it debuted, the same questions are even more boosted with the X6 M. The standard 400-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 has been boosted to a massive 555 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Does it make any more sense? Certainly no more so than any other 500-hp vehicle, but that's not what the X6 M is about. As BMW points out, M is about an expression of joy. Aside from the acceleration, we didn't find the standard X6 all that joyful. We'll have to wait until we get the X6 M on a track in July to see if nearly 40 percent more power can address that. We're just hoping the next M5 gets this engine. Photos Copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.
