A couple of months ago, we brought you spy shots of a Volkswagen Golf R that had been stretched into a proper wagon shape. And now, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off what it calls the Golf R Variant - a proper longroof version of the oh-so-potent Golf R.

That's right, Volkswagen has taken everything we already love about the Golf R and stretched it into a more functional package. The R Variant uses the same turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four as the standard Golf R, rated at 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission. Combined with 4Motion all-wheel drive, this engine has enough oomph to propel the wagon to 62 miles per hour in a scant 5.1 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Mechanically, everything we love about the MkVII Golf R has carried over, including the ESC Sport stability control system, as well as the Driving Profile Selector, with Eco, Normal, Individual, and Race modes (part of the DCC adaptive damping system). Beyond that, it's the same Golf R we've enjoyed previously, but with a more functional shape, able to carry up to 57.2 cubic feet of cargo. Form and function, indeed.

That said, the Golf R Variant is currently slated for European market sales in the spring of 2015, and Volkswagen mentions nothing about US availability as of this writing.
