BMW ditching navigation DVDs for 2009

According to Bimmerfile, <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/05/26/idrive-to-have-40gb-hard-disk/">the drive allotment will</a> have 12GB dedicated to navigational maps (and 8GB for entertainment and 10GB for your address book, because you've got more friends than music, apparently). With nav maps placed on the hard drive, BMW will no longer be providing a case full of map DVDs. The maps will have the entire US on them, or Europe if you pick up your car at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/03/bmw-welt-if-st-peter-bought-a-bimmer-hed-take-delivery-here/">BMW Welt</a>. When things have moved on and it's time to get your maps updated, you'll take your car and your checkbook to a BMW dealer, and they'll install U.S. v2.0. BMW Progressive Activity Sedan coming to Frankfurt in '09

According to Auto Motor und Sport, the 5-series based sedan will debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/FrankfurtMotorShow/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a> in 2009, and is expected to be very reminiscent of the recently released X6, with plummeting C- and D-pillars, a hatchback, a higher ride height (think Audi's Allroad) and measuring in at approximately 4.9 meters (192 inches), about an inch longer than the X6. There's no indication about which markets the PAS will be sold in when it arrives in late 2009 or early 2010, but it's safe to assume that the success of the X6 will be a factor in the PAS' distribution. Spy Shots: 2009 BMW 7 series, we're getting close!

Isn't it about time that the Bavarian automaker unleashed real photos upon the automotive world? These latest shots were taken by our friends over at <a href="http://www.autofiends.com/index.php/2008/06/2009-bmw-7-series-caught-in-the-desert-or-maybe-2010-5-series/">Autofiends.com</a> out in the Nevada desert, and we can again see that the much maligned flame-surfacing treatment common to BMWs from the last few years seems to be falling out of favor. In its stead are longer stretches of mostly flat sheet metal, though some vestigial character lines remain just below the greenhouse and door handles. Up front are exaggerated versions of the familiar kidney grilles which show clear inspiration from the Concept CS from a while back, though they are not nearly as monstrous as those seen on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/18/spy-shots-2010-bmw-5-series-gets-new-nostrils/">the next 5 Series</a>. If rumors hold true, we can expect the spy shots to officially come to an end on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/04/rumormill-2009-bmw-7-series-coming-july-7th/">July 7</a> when the new big Bimmer is expected to make its debut. Spy Shots: Twin-turbo V8 BMW X5

BMW has continued to deny the existence of an M-version of the X5, and by all accounts, it's true. The blokes from Bavaria maintain that the 'ute's size, weight, height and packaging won't warrant the tri-tones of the vaunted M. But the doesn't mean BMW can't produce a hotter version of its biggie-sized SUV. Using the same 407 hp, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 found in the recently released X6, BMW is taking aim at the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. KGP was able to snap off a handful of shots of the turbo'd X5 running the 'Ring, and despite the lack of a factory-approved M on the hatch, it's looking decidedly more aggressive than its siblings. The front fascia is taking all the normal cues from BMW's motorsports department, with massive air intakes and a gaping central air dam, while a set of quad exhausts are framed within a new rear bumper. In The Autoblog Garage: BMW 128i Convertible

No, this small Teut is easy to deride on appearance; one look has you hating it because it's not beautiful while so many of its past brethren have been classically handsome. Whether it suits your taste or not, the 128i convertible we borrowed is unmistakably the work of the wizards of Munich.
