BMW M division asks "What downturn?"

That is, unless you're looking for a BMW M-car. BMW's M division sold more cars worldwide through the end of August of this year than it had in all of 2007. But the economic world didn't end until September, you say? Well, that didn't stop the moneyed from showing up at the M division's door: it sold another 6,000 cars through the end of November, which already puts the branch up fifty-percent over last year's total sales. You can check out the press release after the jump, and walk away knowing that no matter what, there is always enough sun somewhere for people to make hay. <br /><br />

<br />BMW will unveil the all-new Z4 roadster at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Auto-Show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> next month, but there's no need to wait for the show in Motown to see the car in non-spyshot form, as all the Euro-spec details were officially released when the clock struck midnight in Munich. We're into the new bodywork, which is pretty voluptuous compared to the preceding model, with a hint of 507 lineage evident in the car's lines. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/officially-official-2010-bmw-z4/">Follow the jump</a> for the rest of the skinny. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/">2010 BMW Z4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222098/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_09_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222120/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_10_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222143/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_11_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222109/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_14_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222104/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_15_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/officially-official-2010-bmw-z4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: 2010 BMW Z4</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/officially-official-2010-bmw-z4/">Officially Official: 2010 BMW Z4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Sat, 13 Dec 2008 20:30:00 EST. <br />After releasing<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/officially-official-2010-bmw-z4/"> photos and information on its new Z4 roadster</a> yesterday, we now have a pair of videos showing the Z4 in action. In the first clip BMW Automobile design head Adrian van Hooydonk and exterior design head Anders Warming discuss the new design. The operative word in the new Z4's design appears to be "Joy" although how joyous we'll be this car remains to be seen. Certainly the new look should make observers a lot happier than old one but ultimately any car is about the driving experience. Here the second video demonstrates how you can use the Z4 for the automotive equivalent of finger painting. The videos are after the jump. <span style="font-style: italic;">Thanks to Alberto for the tip!</span><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/">2010 BMW Z4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222098/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_09_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222120/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_10_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222143/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_11_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222109/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_14_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222104/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_15_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/14/video-2010-bmw-z4-hits-the-road/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: 2010 BMW Z4 hits the road</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/14/video-2010-bmw-z4-hits-the-road/">VIDEO: 2010 BMW Z4 hits the road</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 15:59:00 EST. <br />BMW's M5 is understated enough to fly under the radar of the general public, but those in the know, familiar with its capabilities and the legacy it carries, grow silent with reverence if you pull up to them at the gas pump. Who can resist a vehicle that can stop conversations mid-sentence, and accelerates strongly enough to extinguish candles on the next block? We certainly couldn't, and thus began our week with the mighty M5.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/">In the Autoblog Garage: 2008 BMW M5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227827/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/01_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227829/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/02_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227830/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/03_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227833/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/04_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227834/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/05_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2008 Dan Roth / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/16/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>In The Autoblog Garage: 2008 BMW M5</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/16/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5/">In The Autoblog Garage: 2008 BMW M5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 12:28:00 EST. Spy Shots: Are reports of the BMW CS' demise exaggerated?

A little more than a year ago the CS Concept was going to be the basis for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/21/production-take-on-bmw-cs-concept-likely/">a new flagship sedan</a>. A month ago, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/04/bmw-decides-not-to-build-concept-cs/">BMW turned heel</a> and walked away from a production version, running instead into the arms of smaller vehicles and EfficientDynamics. Now, <em>Evo</em> claims it has caught BMW testing a CS mule near BMW's headquarters. What is actually pictured, however, is a 7 Series with a CS-style nose and headlights. While a production CS would be based on the 7 Series, this is a long way from BMW actually building the CS. We aren't saying they won't, since every car has to start somewhere... but we are saying be skeptical.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/">BMW Concept CS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/218200/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301162.w700_thumbnail.jp g" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/218198/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301168.w700_thumbnail.jp g" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/218204/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301177.w600_thumbnail.jp g" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/218205/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301189.w600_thumbnail.jp g" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-cs/218201/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/6301201.w600_thumbnail.jp g" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evospyshots/233182/bmw_cs.html">Evo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/16/spy-shots-are-reports-of-the-bmw-cs-demise-exaggerated/">Spy Shots: Are reports of the BMW CS' demise exaggerated?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 18:01:00 EST. BMW loses Clonewars Italian court battle

A court in Italy has just ruled that the crossover pictured above, the five-seat CEO built by Shuanghuan Automobile of Shijiazhuang, China, is not a clone of the BMW X5. Um... yeah. The legal battles began when Shuanghuan introduced their "Noble" last year, a near-clone of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/25/u-s-smart-fortwo-sales-so-strong-penske-wants-15-000-more/">Smart fortwo</a>. Mercedes-Benz wasn't impressed, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/21/mercedes-may-sue-over-chinese-smart-clone/">threatened a lawsuit</a>. Shortly thereafter, BMW started losing sleep over the Chinese CEO, an obvious facsimile of their previous-generation X5 (E53). The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/27/bmw-joins-smart-in-threatening-copy-cat-chinese/">Bavarian automaker took Shuanghuan to court</a> in Munich this past summer and won their case, and when Martin Motors (the distributor of Shuanghuan Automobiles in Italy and central Europe) started selling the CEO in early 2007, BMW again took legal action, this time in the Italian judicial system. <br /></p>
<p>Last week, the Germans met their defeat when the Italian courts rejected their claims. To date, Martin Motors has sold about 200 copies of the CEO and expects to sell about 1200 this year in their European markets. "We are convinced the CEO wasn't a clone of the X5. We are happy to see our view supported by a court ruling," said an obviously pleased spokesperson from Martin Motors. We have to wonder how quickly the Italians would change their tune if Shuanghuan began to knock-off the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/first-drive-2009-lamborghini-gallardo-lp560-4/">Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4</a>. </p>

BMW uses 2010 Z4 as art car (of sorts)

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>Click above for a high-res gallery of the Z4 painting "An Expression of Joy"</small></span><small></small><br /></div>
<br />Normally the models in BMW's art car line -- sixteen and counting -- get their body panels splashed up with designs by the who's who of the art world. BMW has decided to switch up the concept for a commercial for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/officially-official-2010-bmw-z4/">new Z4</a>; instead of the car being the canvas, the Z4 paints a canvas. Guided by modern artist Robin Rhode and a team of technicians, the Z4 is rigged up with machines that spray paint from the wheels, with everything captured on film by director Jake Scott, Ridley's son. The tire prints in all kinds of hues are laid down on an enormous white canvas, and the result is called "An Expression of Joy." You can check out the press release after the jump, the high-res gallery of images below, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Wallpaper</span> magazine has <a href="http://www.wallpaper.com/cars/behind-the-scenes-bmw-z4-ad-shoot/2937">behind the scenes video</a>.
