BMW kills X7 to focus on X1 and MINI SAV

<br />For better or worse, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-bmw-x1-concept/">BMW X1 "concept"</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-mini-crossover-concept/">MINI Crossover</a> are destined for production. BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer maintains that both models will do well in these economic and fuel-conscious times, but the X7 - originally slated for production in 2013 - has been killed due to the CUV's inability to "generate sufficient growth," according to <em>Automotive News</em>.<br /><br />The MINI is expected to hit the market in 2010, while the X1 will arrive in the U.S. later that year or in early 2011. While Reithofer admits that the X6 is a niche vehicle, he contends that the X1 has the ability to be a more mainstream player in the market. To which we ask: how? While a biggie MINI may be a contradiction in terms and execution, the crossover at least has some nostalgia and style on its side. On the other hand, the X1 doesn't seem to bring much to the table and risks cannibalizing sales of its slightly large sibling (X3) and even a few 3-series wagon buyers - if it even sells in the first place.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/">BMW Concept X1</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/1067023/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/00_bmwconceptx1_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/1067037/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/01_bmwconceptx1_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/1067036/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/02_bmwconceptx1_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/1067035/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/03_bmwconceptx1_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/1067026/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/04_bmwconceptx1_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/">MINI Crossover Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/1029028/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/01_mini_crossover_high_th umbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/1029033/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/02_mini_crossover_high_th umbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/1029035/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/03_mini_crossover_high_th umbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/1029029/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/04_mini_crossover_high_th umbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-crossover-concept/1029036/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/05_mini_crossover_high_th umbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20081006/ANA03/810060360/1130">Automotive News</a> - Sub. BMW M3 could campaign in 24 hours of Le Mans

<div align="center"><strong><e m><small>click above to view more high-res live shots of BMW M3 ALMS race car</small></em></strong><br /></div>
<br />When it comes to racing, diversity is key. Who doesn't love to root for their favorite brand to win against its fiercest rivals? We hope that BMW gets its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/29/bmw-m3-facelift-revealed/">latest M3</a> certified by the FIA in time for a showdown against with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/09/corvettes-back-in-alms-in-2009-with-gt1-and-gt2-programs/">the Corvette</a> and others in Le Mans GT racing, which will institute a new set of rules for the 2010 season. There's more than one way to get horsepower from a V8 engine, as clearly demonstrated by these two diametrically opposed class competitors. Team Corvette's brute strength and low-down grunt would go up against finesse and high-strung reviness from BMW. Kinda reminds us of the classic Ford versus Ferrari feuds of the '60s. In any case, BMW now needs to work with the FIA to get its racer properly sanctioned and approved, as it has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/06/chicago-2008-bmw-back-in-alms-with-rahal-letterman-racing-m3/">already done</a> for the American Le Mans racing series. Neiman Marcus nabs first 2009 BMW 7 Series

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/carbuying/" rel="tag">Car Buying</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/" rel="tag">Sedans/Saloons</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/nmo3607_mp_opt.jpg" /><br /><br />Those who do their daily shopping within the pages of the <a href="http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/sitelets/christmasbook/christmasbook.jhtml">Neim an Marcus Christmas Book</a> will be the first able to purchase the new 2009 BMW 7 Series beginning October 17th. The price of early adoption in this case will be a steep $160,000 for one of 31 Neiman Marcus Limited-Edition 2009 BMW Individual 7 Series sedans based on the new 750Li. While that price is tens of thousands above what we expect the 7 Series base price to be, buyers will get much more than just the car. Included in the asking price is a trip to Europe to take delivery of the special 7 Series at BMW's headquarters in Munich, after which buyers will tour the south of France in their new sedan. After the fun and frolicking, BMW will have the car shipped back to the U.S. for you. And, of course, you aren't just purchasing a standard 7 Series. Each model has been customized by BMW Individual and painted in a special Diopside Black metallic color with an interior stitched in Champagne Merino leather and accented with wood and Piano Black inserts. Is all that worth 160 large? That depends on how nice you want Christmas to be this year.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/">2009 BMW 7 Series</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/901911/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_17_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/901919/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_18_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/901925/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_19_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/901923/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_16_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-7-series-3/901920/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/2009bmw7_1280_02_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW, <a href="http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/sitelets/christmasbook/fantasy.jhtml?cid=OCBF9_N MO3607&cmcat=Christmas&ic id=NMCBpageF81">Neiman Marcus</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/08/neiman-marcus-nabs-first-2009-bmw-7-series/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neiman Marcus nabs first 2009 BMW 7 Series</em></a></p><h6 style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"></h6><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/08/neiman-marcus-nabs-first-2009-bmw-7-series/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1335617/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/08/neiman-marcus-nabs-first-2009-bmw-7-series/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a>

Meet the Beckers: Audi has fun at expense of BMW, Mercedes and Lexus

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/videos/" rel="tag">Videos</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/audi/" rel="tag">Audi</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/lexus/" rel="tag">Lexus</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/mercedes-benz/" rel="tag">Mercedes-Benz</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/meet-the-beckers-audi-has-fun-with-competitors-stereotypes/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/meetthebeckers1_opt.jpg" alt="" /></a><br />
<div align="center"><em><stron g><small>Click above to watch video <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/meet-the-beckers-audi-has-fun-with-competitors-stereotypes/">after the jump</a></small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Audi wants you to know that its customers are normal people just like you and I, and it's created a series of shorts to prove this point. But instead of showing moms and dads driving their kids to soccer games in a Q7 or going through the McDonalds drive-thru to pick up some chicken nuggets in an A4, the German automaker took a more comedic tack. Before you roll your eyes and scroll down to the next post, trust us on this one, it is absolutely priceless. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/meet-the-beckers-audi-has-fun-with-competitors-stereotypes/">After the jump</a> is a three-and-a-half-minute video called "Meet the Beckers" that chronicles a couple driving to the family home (mansion) for a reunion. They seem normal and even likable. The video also shows other members of the Becker clan heading to the reunion, but they're driving a BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus RX350. Instead of pointing out the virtues of Audi vs. the competition, the four-ringed automaker hammers home the long standing stereotypes associated with the other players in the luxury market. The creepy couple in the BMW convertible cuts off a Prius and the driver has a Bluetooth headset on his ear. The Mercedes owner is an old man with a hot young bride, and he he drives away with the wipers going and his blinker on. The Lexus owners are yuppies with twins who appear to have a devil-worship problem. This is laugh till you cry stuff, folks, and an absolute must watch.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfXqt0PuHQk">YouT ube</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/meet-the-beckers-audi-has-fun-at-expense-of-bmw-mercedes-and-l/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Meet the Beckers: Audi has fun at expense of BMW, Mercedes and Lexus</em></a></p><h6 style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"></h6><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/meet-the-beckers-audi-has-fun-at-expense-of-bmw-mercedes-and-l/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1337463/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/meet-the-beckers-audi-has-fun-at-expense-of-bmw-mercedes-and-l/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a>

BMW X1 to offer both all- and rear-wheel drive

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/suvs/" rel="tag">SUVs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/euro/" rel="tag">Euro</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/crossovers-cuvs/" rel="tag">Crossovers/CUVs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><p align="center"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x1-concept/1067023/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_x1_concept_450.jpg" /></a><br /><strong><em><small>Cli ck above for high-res gallery of the BMW X1 Concept</small></em></strong><br /></p>
<p><br />In a move that marks a significant departure from its current direction, BMW will offer both all- and rear-wheel drive versions of its upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/01/officially-official-bmw-concept-x1/">BMW X1</a> model. Up to this point, consumers have only been offered all-wheel-drive mechanicals under the skin of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/11/first-drive-2009-bmw-x6-xdrive35i-and-xdrive50i/">BMW X6</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/09/video-new-bmw-x5-in-motion/">BMW X5</a> and smaller <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/06/28/more-bmw-x3-us-gets-same-new-style-260-hp/">BMW X3</a>. The German automaker cites weight savings and gains in efficiency as the reason why its newest and smallest SAV loses its front driveshafts, but be assured that it's also a cost-saving maneuver as automakers squeeze to keep prices down. As the models will appear virtually identical from the outside, BMW will offer the rear-wheel-drive version with a special "sDrive" badge to differentiate it from the xDrive-equipped all-wheel-drive model (of course, you'll have to squint to discern the badge differences between a rear-wheel-drive "BMW X1 sDrive28i" and the all-wheel-drive "BMW X1 xDrive28i"). Built on the 3 Series platform (and set for production at the same Leipzig plant), the production version of the X1 is expected to look much like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-bmw-x1-concept/">X1 Concept shown in Paris</a> last week. There has been no word on when we'll see it on this side of the pond, but those in Europe should look for the X1 to appear in showrooms sometime in 2010.</p>
