Rumormill: BMW considering four-cylinder 3-series for U.S.

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/coupes/" rel="tag">Coupes</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/" rel="tag">Sedans/Saloons</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/euro/" rel="tag">Euro</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/green/" rel="tag">Green</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/rumormill/" rel="tag">Rumormill</a></p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/bmwlogo.jpg" />Four-cylinder BMWs are commonplace in Europe, but here in the States you can't buy anything Bavarian with less than six pistons. <em>Inside Line</em> is reporting that the German automaker may change that by adding the direct-injected 2.0L four-pot from Europe to the 3-Series. The 170-hp engine powers the 320i and 120i across the pond. The models are well-received there, and for good reason, too. The ultra-efficient powerplant averages over 38 mpg in the European combined test cycle while still providing the razor-sharp handling that is BMW's trademark. <br /><br />BMW project director Oliver Friedmann said that a four-cylinder petrol Bimmer would have a "desirable effect" here in the U.S., but didn't commit any concrete plans for a U.S. four-banger. He did say that the U.S. probably isn't ready for a diesel four-cylinder, but we beg to differ. Our friends at AutoblogGreen had a blast in the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/08/05/in-the-autobloggreen-garage-2008-bmw-123d-3-door-hatchback/">twin-turbo 123d</a> and managed 37 mpg while thoroughly testing the oil-burner's limits. We think the petrol 2.0L would be well received as well. While four-cylinder luxury cars were taboo just a few years ago, high fuel prices have given Americans plenty of motivation to welcome a 2.0L Bimmer with open arms.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=131566">Inside Line</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/04/rumormill-bmw-considering-four-cylinder-3-series-for-u-s/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1303778/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/04/rumormill-bmw-considering-four-cylinder-3-series-for-u-s/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

Rumormill: BMW 8 Series on the way, no M-version planned

With its styling based heavily on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/22/details-emerge-about-bmws-new-flagship-sedan/">BMW Concept CS</a> (pictured above), the platform for the new flagship will be shared with the new 7 Series. Under the hood, most expect to see a 6.0-liter V12 based on the current M5's V10, or a twin-turbocharged V8 like the one rumored for the next-gen M5. Even though both of those engines promise prodigious amounts of power, and the lightened chassis will be tuned for performance, BMW insists the new car will not be badged an M8. Regardless, we seem to recall that the lack of an M badge on the mid-90's BMW 850CSi didn't seem to deter enthusiasts.</p>

Rendered Speculation: BMW X2 is X1's sporty sibling

Dubbed the X2, this coupe-ish soft-roader will be to the X1 what the X6 is to the X5.<br /><br />The 1-series-based X1 is currently carrying the codename "Sports Activity Wagon" (SAW), whereas the X2 is known internally as a "Sports Activity Runabout" (SAR). In keeping with BMW's new nomenclature and styling, the X2 will sport different bodywork, up-market materials, more standard equipment and a wider track to differentiate the two-door CUV from its four-door counterpart. Powertrains fitted with BMW's Efficient Dynamics system will be part of the package, beginning with 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines, eventually evolving into mild- and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.<br /><br />While the X1 has already been green-lit for production, the X2 is still in limbo. But if it does come to market, expect the X2 to bow sometime in 2011 after the X1 launches in 2010.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/BMW-X2-scoop-BMWs-new-baby-SUV/?content-block=1">CAR</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/BMW-X2-scoop-BMWs-new-baby-SUV/?content-block=1>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/05/rendered-speculation-bmw-x2-is-x1s-sporty-sibling/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1305743/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/05/rendered-speculation-bmw-x2-is-x1s-sporty-sibling/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

Confirmed: BMW working on 4 cylinder turbo, may come to U.S.

<div align="center"><strong><e m><small>Click above for high-res photo gallery of the BMW Concept 1 Series tii</small></em><small></small></strong><small></small><br /></div>
<br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/04/rumormill-bmw-considering-four-cylinder-3-series-for-u-s/">Rumors</a> of a new four cylinder engine from BMW have been <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/09/10/confirmed-new-4-cylinder-in-development/">confirmed</a> by BMW's North American leader Jim O'Donnell. Questions on whether it will be offered in the United States, though, are still very much in the air. "We can't really confirm or deny when it is going to come into the US, or if it is going to come into the US, until after the election and the government makes it clear what is going to be the platform that manufacturers have got to work to," says O'Donnell. It really seems so simple to us. If an automaker has a new engine that offers both good performance and good fuel economy, it should be offered in the U.S. market. <br /><br />Granted, the last effort to sell four-cylinder Bimmers in the States didn't go over so well. But BMW's reputation was earned first by cars like the 2002, which was motivated by a sprightly little four-banger. Considering the fact that BMW owns the MINI brand, the automaker should know better than anyone else that Americans are now willing to spend a good deal of money on small cars with small engines. We'll gladly support a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/02/bmw-approves-tii-versions-of-1-and-3-series/">revival of the tii badge</a> on a lightweight 1 Series platform powered by a nice turbo four.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-1-series-tii-1/">BMW Concept 1 Series tii</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-1-series-tii-1/453769/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/tokyo-bmw-tii-019_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-1-series-tii-1/453768/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/tokyo-bmw-tii-018_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-1-series-tii-1/453767/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/tokyo-bmw-tii-017_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-1-series-tii-1/453766/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/tokyo-bmw-tii-016_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-concept-1-series-tii-1/453765/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/tokyo-bmw-tii-015_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/09/10/confirmed-new-4-cylinder-in-development/">BimmerFile</a>]<h6 style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"></h6><a href=http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/09/10/confirmed-new-4-cylinder-in-development/>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/12/confirmed-bmw-working-on-4-cylinder-turbo-may-come-to-u-s/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1311551/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/12/confirmed-bmw-working-on-4-cylinder-turbo-may-come-to-u-s/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a>

Video: Why some BMW owners have a bad reputation

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/videos/" rel="tag">Videos</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/humor/" rel="tag">Humor</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/10/video-why-some-bmw-owners-have-a-bad-reputation/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/bmw_dancer.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><em>Click above to watch the video. Trust us, the chicks dig it.</em><br /><br />So, just what is it about BMW drivers that gives them their reputation? Is it that they are poor drivers, like some cyclists in the U.K. <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/09/03/cyclists-range-rover-drivers-worst-on-the-road/">apparently believe</a>? Or are they all just <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/21/we-say-bmw-you-say-part-2/">self-obsessed</a> jerks... or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/19/we-say-bmw-you-say">worse</a>? Before you BMW drivers get all up in arms, there are some BMW owners amongst our ranks and we think stereotypes suck, so we are not labeling anybody. Still, there exists a perception that drivers of some brands (and BMWs in particular) act a certain way. Watch the video after the break for a possible explanation. Seriously, there's no good reason to stop your hardtop/convertible's top halfway down unless you are trying to show off. And blare some irritatingly unmanly music with which to dance and disrobe to. Is it just us or do you think this guy is channeling his inner <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0oUl_Jvk_0">Elai ne</a>? It's more like a full-bodied dry heave set to music.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysh7YeyV9Sc&eurl= http://www.motivemag.com/pub/news/Ultimate_M3_Owner_Spotted _Recorded_YouTubed.shtml" >Youtube</a> via <a href="http://www.motivemag.com/pub/news/Ultimate_M3_Owner_Spotted _Recorded_YouTubed.shtml" >Motive Magazine</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/12/video-why-some-bmw-owners-have-a-bad-reputation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Why some BMW owners have a bad reputation</em></a></p><h6 style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"></h6><a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysh7YeyV9Sc&eurl= http://www.motivemag.com/pub/news/Ultimate_M3_Owner_Spotted _Recorded_YouTubed.shtml> Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/12/video-why-some-bmw-owners-have-a-bad-reputation/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1309333/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/12/video-why-some-bmw-owners-have-a-bad-reputation/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a>
